Facts About Lake Keowee Retirement

Lake Keowee is the largest reservoir in western South Carolina. The Lake is owned by Duke Power, which uses it for hydro power and to cool 3 nuclear plants. It was created by by damming the Little River and the Keowee River. The land inundated by Lake Keowee was formerly home to the Cherokee Indians Lower Town Region. Their combined outflow makes up the Seneca River, which in turn is a tributary of the Savannah River. The resulting lake has 18,372 acres of water and a 300-mile shoreline. Since the lake was constructed it has become a popular retirement destination as well as a source of recreation for the area.
